HARTFORD–In just two years, State Police have saved 100 people who otherwise would have died from overdoses.

On Sunday, the 100th overdose patient was saved when a trooper administered naloxone intranasal spray in Woodbury.

Narcan is a brand name for naloxone, a drug that counteracts the effects of heroin and other opioid overdoses, often reviving people who were close to death.

In 2014, a new law was passed so that anyone could administer Narcan or naloxone without being charged, and all State Police troopers were trained on how to administer the drug.

Governor Dan Malloy said, “Training and equipping our state’s first responders was a commonsense step in our efforts to combat the alarming, nationwide trend of heroin and prescription drug abuse.  Not only are these frontline men and women saving lives, but their action is helping people begin the necessary path toward treatment and recovery, and I thank them for their service.”

Many local police and fire departments also train their officers in using different forms of naloxone and give them kits to take on every call.
