KENT — The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) announced Wednesday that two local swimming areas would be closed after testing high for bacteria.
Samples are collected weekly by DEEP staff and are analyzed at the Department of Public Health Lab for the presence of certain bacteria.
Local health departments are responsible for sampling municipal beaches and swimming areas.
Both Lake Waramaug in Kent and Squantz Pond in New Fairfield were deemed closed Wednesday.
Squantz Pond was also closed in July.
Water will be retested and DEEP will reopen the swimming areas when they deem it safe.
The city of Torrington also closed three beaches on Bantam Lake due to an outbreak of potentially harmful blue-green algae: Sandy Beach,.Morris Town Beach, and Litchfield Town Beach.
Earlier this summer, Silver Sands State Park in Milford was closed for several days due to high levels of bacteria in the water.
