BRIDGEPORT — Thirteen people were seriously injured when bullets began flying at a late-night house party Sunday.
Officers responded to reports of shots being fired in the area of 19 Plymouth Street around 1:30 a.m. Upon arrival, they discovered a large group of party-goers had been shot in the backyard of the residence.
Investigators learned that thirteen people were struck by gunfire in a suspected ambush. Eleven of those victims were hit by bullets in their lower extremities and were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries. A male victim shot in the face is expected to survive, while another female with a facial gunshot wound is in critical condition.
Three victims were transported to St. Vincent’s Hospital, some by private vehicle. The rest were brought to Bridgeport Hospital by ambulances and other concerned party-goers.
According to evidence gathered at the scene, at least two shooters fired through the hedges separating the party house with neighboring homes. Investigators believe the shooters entered the backyards of either 31 or 33 Plymouth Street and began opening fire into the adjacent yard.
Senator Chris Murphy said in a statement:
“The news of last night’s mass shooting in Bridgeport is infuriating – I’m simply unable to contemplate the evil behind such contempt for human life. I’m overwhelmingly grateful that surprisingly no lives were lost. I thank Bridgeport’s first responders and emergency services for their outstanding professionalism and effectiveness in times of crisis. I stand with the people of Bridgeport and local law enforcement as they investigate this attempted mass murder and bring the perpetrators to justice.”
Congressman Jim Himes also said in a statement:
“I join the rest of the Connecticut delegation, and all people who care about a safer country for our families, in calling on Congress to take action to prevent these mass shootings and the daily gun violence that affects so many Americans instead of standing in cowardly silence.”
