HARTFORD — The mayor of Connecticut’s capital city is making a pitch for more regional cooperation, urging wealthier neighbors to help him solve a massive budget deficit.

Democrat Luke Bronin contends it’s in the best interest of Hartford’s suburbs that his city is financially healthy.

Bronin is making his pitch throughout the region, reminding people that his and other Connecticut communities can only tax local property.

Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton, the president of the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities, says cities and towns need additional taxing authority. His group is preparing a package of recommendations for lawmakers to consider in January.

This isn’t the first push for regionalism. However, advocates agree there appears to be more urgency for bigger initiatives given the financial challenges facing communities and the state budget.
