CHICAGO — An 8-year-old Chicago girl was shot in the arm as she attended a vigil for a 14-year-old boy who had been fatally shot earlier.

Jamia says she felt her arm stinging and she called for her mother when the bullet hit her. Chicago police say she's one of more than two dozen children under age 13 shot so far this year in the city, and one of four in the past two weeks.

"It's just sad you can't go anywhere in Chicago anymore without anything happening to you or your children," Jamia's mother told WGN TV. Jamie Ellis lost a sister to gun violence seven years ago. "It's just messed up."

Chicago police say no one is in custody. Police say a 40-year-old woman was shot in the hand in the same vigil.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel also spoke out after the shooting about the increasing prevalence of gun violence. "Literally these are gangbangers shooting at each other and affecting the lives of children," he said.  “I've visited hospitals with kids, I've never seen a gang banger there to say, 'I'm sorry.'  I've never seen a gangbanger say, 'I'm responsible for doing something wrong.'"
