WEST HAVEN -- One person died in a fire at a condominium building Monday morning.

The fire was called in at 4:30 a.m. at the Orange Landing Condominium complex at  153 Bull Hill Lane in West Haven.

One man was was found unconscious, and was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital where he was pronounced dead.  No one else was hurt.

State and local fire marshals say the fire was a result of carelessly discarded smoking materials.

The man was dating a woman who rents the apartment. Chief Stephen Scafariello, of West Haven's West Shore Fire District, says the man's girlfriend was not home at the time of the fire was called in.

The Orange Landing Condo's have three buildings with about 50 units in each building totally about 700 people. A source tells FOX 61's Tony Terzi that about 10 years ago, a man died in a fire in that exact same first-floor unit. A different person was renting the unit at the time.

Scafariello said the fire doors in the first floor hallway near the apartment did their job in making sure smoke and fire was contained.

The building is located near Exit 42 on I-95 South.
