DETROIT — Donald Trump called for a “civil rights agenda of our time” when he visited a predominantly black church for the first time.
The Republican presidential nominee told the congregation at Detroit’s Great Faith Ministries International on Saturday that he would fix the “many wrongs” facing African-Americans.
About 400 protesters outside the church denounced Trump’s visit, skeptical of his effort to reach out to black voters. Inside, parishioners said they were willing to hear Trump’s message.
After the church visit, Trump visited the southwest Detroit childhood home of retired neurosurgeon and presidential candidate Ben Carson.
Meanwhile, Trump’s running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, tells NBC’s “Meet The Press” that he plans to release his tax returns in the next week. Trump has begged off releasing his tax returns, citing an audit.
