HAMDEN–A man who was trying to evade police tried to get away with drug crimes by getting rid of the evidence. That didn’t end up working out too well for him.
On September 3 around 9 p.m. police saw a car driving very fast on Morse Street in Hamden, and the car didn’t have any headlights or taillights on despite it being nighttime. The officer tried to pull the car over, but he kept driving fast along Morse Street.
During the chase, officers saw a bag thrown “up and over” the car. Some officers stopped to pick up the bag, which landed on the corner of Morse Street and Prospect Street, and found 600 wax folds of heroin. The heroin weighed about 168 grams, and the street value was about $12,600.
The suspect eventually stopped on Prospect Street, put his car in reverse, and hit a police cruiser.
The driver, identified as Victor Dewindt, 56, of New Haven, was arrested after the crash and charged with possession of narcotics, possession of narcotics with intent to sell, interfering with a police officer, reckless driving, failure to obey officer’s signal, operating under suspension and failure to have headlights lit.
Besides the heroin, police seized just under $10,000 that Dewindt had in cash.
Dewindt was held on $150,000 bond and is due in court September 16.
