BRANFORD–It took quite some time to narrow down a suspect, but Branford Police arrested an elderly man on Monday in the case of gunshots.

Over the past year and a half, police have gotten a number of complaints of residents hearing gunshots around the Supply Pond, North Chestnut Street and North Main Street area. Both business owners and residents had called police, but the only description they could give was that a dark vehicle may have been involved.

On Monday around 7 p.m., police got yet another complaint from people at a restaurant on North Main Street. The complainants said the gunshots sounded like they were coming from a construction site at 250 Main Street.

Police responded to that address and found Howard Titus, 81, of Branford, in a dark red car. Titus told the officers he had firearms in his trunk, and that he was shooting at a dirt mound. Police found two .22 caliber rifles and a .45 caliber handgun.

Titus admitted to firing his weapons on several occasions.

He is charged with unlawful discharge of a firearm, reckless endangerment in the first degree, criminal trespass and breach of peace. He has no prior criminal record, and was released on $2,000 bond with a court date of September 20.
