STRATFORD — A man believed to be suicidal got in a gunfight with Stratford police early Wednesday morning. Around 4:45 a.m., officers were called to the Lordship section of town, by Russian Beach, for reports of a man with a gun.

Stratford officers found the man and told him to drop his weapon. But, police said he advanced toward the two officers, and fired at least one round toward police. Two Stratford officers returned fire, and at least on hit the armed man, who was transported to Bridgeport Hospital with what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.

The man was identified as Timothy Johnson, 40, of Stratford, and he remains in the hospital.

The two officers have been on the force for 26 and 2 years. They are on paid administrative leave, per department policy.

Roger Cox, a nearby Stratford resident, said he was shocked when he learned on television and online about the shooting in this neighborhood because it is your typical, lovely beach community.

Sources tell FOX 61’s Tony Terzi that it is believed the suspect was attempting what is known as a “suicide by cop.” In other words, trying to get himself killed.
