Due to the continued drought, one water company is issuing mandatory watering bans in several towns.

Aquarion Water Company spoke to several towns, and teamed up with local officials to issue watering bans in Stonington and Mystic in the southeast corner of the state, and Darien, Greenwich, New Canaan and Stamford in the southwest corner of the state.

The mandatory bans are effective immediately, and banned the use of any outdoor watering devices, including sprinklers, soaker hoses and irrigation systems. Hand-held hoses can be used, at least for now.

The company intends to make automated phone calls to customers to alert them of the ban.

“We are telling our customers to turn off their irrigation systems and sprinklers for the season,” said Charles V. Firlotte, Aquarion president and CEO. “We are doing this to ensure that we have an adequate water supply for everyday use and fire protection.”

Much of Connecticut is in a severe drought.
