NEW HARTFORD — One person is dead and another injured after they were struck by a car on Route 44 in New Hartford Friday morning.
Lifestar took the two victims to Charlotte-Hungerford Hospital, State Police Trooper Kelly Grant said in a statement. The victims suffered serious injuries and State Police said one of them later died.
The victims are identified as William Pellum, 69, and Sybil Pellum, 67. William died from his injuries, and Sybil is still being treated at the hospital.
The accident happened around 9:15 a.m. near 495 Main Street, which is also known as Route 44. The road had been closed, but has since reopened.
Police say the car was driving when it went off the roadway and onto the sidewalk, where it hit the pedestrians. The driver has been identified as Shivan Desai, 29, of New Hartford. He was taken to the hospital for a suspected minor injury.
No charges have been field, and the crash remains under investigation.
