Manhunt leads to suspect arrest in fatal East Haven crash

EAST HAVEN — Police have arrested a man who they believe was responsible for a fatal hit and run crash Wednesday afternoon.

East Haven Police said after an extensive investigation, they arrested Johnassis Melendez, 23, on evading responsibility resulting in death, and other criminal and motor vehicle charges.

Around noon on Wednesday, a car crashed into a pole on Frontage Road in East Haven, near Home Depot. Three people were in the car at the time of the crash, and one person, a woman, in the car died. She has been identified as Gaitana Girgenti, 27.

A second woman in the car was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

A third person in the car fled the scene before police arrived. Police then initiated a manhunt, which concluded on Saturday morning with the suspect’s arrest.

He was last seen in the wooded area by Dunkin’ Donuts. It is still unknown where he was apprehended three days later. Police provided a picture of him from the scene of the crash.fatal crash in east haven

East Haven police are still investigating. Once the investigation is completed, additional charges will follow.
