NEW BRITAIN — A New Britain police officer was injured after his vehicle collided with a SUV driven by a 13-year-old.
A stretch of busy roadway was closed for several hours while investigators combed over the scene. The area between Hayes Street and Biruta Street reopened just before 11 a.m. Sunday
Police say a 13-year-old male was behind the wheel of the SUV at the time, out on a suspected joyride.
Both drivers, including the officer and the teen, were taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The officer was released at approximately 10:30 a.m. and is reportedly doing well, despite having experienced significant whiplash.
“He’s very sore and banged up,” said Chief Wardwell of the New Britain Police Department. “He’ll need a few more days’ bed rest and hopefully will be back with us then.”
Upon a medical review, the 13-year-old was released into the custody of his parents pending the results of a continued police investigation.
