MILFORD–Several agencies were searching for a person in the Long Island Sound near Milford on Wednesday afternoon after getting a report that a boater was missing, but it all turned out to be false.

A 70-year-old man reported that his 99-year-old father had gone overboard around 4:15 p.m., and that he hadn’t surfaced. That launched a huge search, with the Coast Guard responding with water apparatuses and a helicopter, and the New Haven and Milford fire departments’ dive teams assisting.

However, when police interviewed the 71-year-old, he admitted his father died several years ago.

The search has now ended, and police are further investigating the matter.
