NEW HAVEN — The leader of a large heroin distribution ring pleaded guilty in Federal Court Tuesday to charges that could land him in prison for up to 40 years.

Wilson Vasquez, 43 of New Haven, plead guilty  to one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute, and to distribute 100 grams or more of heroin. He faces a prison term of five to 40 years when he is sentenced.

Authorities said Vasquez was arrested in July 2015. Through surveillance and wire taps, they determined he had obtained large quantities of heroin, packaged it and sold it through dealers on the street.

When he was arrested, police seized seized about 500 grams of raw heroin, three handguns five vehicles and bank accounts containing more than $300,000, which  have been frozen according to officials.

Seventeen others arrested in the investigation have also pleaded guilty.

On June 21, Vasquez was sentenced to 12 years in prison.
