PLAINFIELD -- A late night house fire in Plainfield claimed the life of a 6-year-old girl. On Wednesday just before 10:45 p.m., first-responders were called to the home on Winsor Avenue in Plainfield.
Police said they were first to arrive on the scene and found the house filled with flames. Dispatchers told them there were occupants that could be trapped inside.
Police said they were able to get inside and remove a child and a woman through a window. But, 6-year-old Isabella Patterson was trapped inside.
Her mother, Jeannette Lawyea, suffered serious burns. Father Anthony Patterson and a young child suffered only minor injuries. Two Plainfield officers were also taken to the hospital where they were treated for smoke inhalation and later released.
Thursday morning, Isabella was found dead.
A GoFundMe page has been set up for the family. The town is also accepting donation for the family.
The home was a Habitat for Humanity home that had been built a few months ago. Habitat finished building the home in late June, and it was immediately purchased by the family.
First responders from Plainfield, Moosup, Central Village, Atwood Hose, Canterbury Ambulance, Moosup American Legion Ambulance, and American Ambulance all responded to the scene. The Connecticut State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit, the Plainfield Fire Marshal, and the Plainfield Police Department are conducting an investigation into what caused the deadly fire.
Terri O'Rourke, executive director and CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Eastern Connecticut, Inc. in New London released the following statement:
We first and foremost are thinking of the family, keeping them in our thoughts and prayers, we ask the community do this as well. We are coordinating with local officials as they go through the investigation. We do not have any more information to share at this time. Out of respect for family privacy, we ask that the extended community please pray for them.
