MIDDLETOWN — A Middletown mother  was arrested after police said she locked her son out of their apartment on a rainy morning.

On Monday morning just after 9:15 police were called to 43 Front Street for a juvenile complaint.  The caller said that her 12-year-old son wasn’t listening to her and was refusing to go to school.

Police found the boy standing near the back door of the house when they arrived. Police said it was lightly raining and he was standing at the base of a covered staircase leading to the second floor apartment where he lived. The boy told police he was locked out and that his mother had left in her car about 20-25 minutes before they arrived.

Police called the boy’s mother, Tamika Jackson, and said she told them she had an appointment to go to and would not be able to come home immediately. Police said “Jackson did not seem to understand that she could not simply leave her child outside and call the police to deal with him.”

Police  explained to Jackson that she cannot lock her son out of the house on a rainy day without adequate shelter and that he had no access to a restroom nor access to food nor water. Police said that the boy had no telephone and his closest family resides in New Haven.

Police said Jackson told them  she wasn’t concerned because he could have knocked on the neighbor’s door if he needed anything.

Jackson was arrested and charged with risk of injury to a child.

She was processed and released on $10,000 bail.  She is scheduled to appear at Middletown Superior Court on Monday, October 3.
