BRIDGEPORT — Bridgeport police say they are closing in on a suspect that they believe fired the shot that killed a 36-year-old man at a popular Mexican restaurant this past weekend.

Chief Armando Perez says police have a person of interest in the murder of Cristobal Hernandez and he’s confident an arrest will be made within the next 48 hours.

Hernandez was shot in the chest at close range during a fight that broke out inside El Paraiso Restaurant around 10 p.m. Sunday. He was rushed to St. Vincent’s Medical Center, where he died.

The restaurant is a favorite haunt for Bridgeport’s Mexican and El Salvadoran population, especially on Sunday nights.

Perez says customers were throwing bottles and furniture at each other during the fight. It’s unclear what sparked the melee.
