OLD SAYBROOK – Two Florida men were arrested by the Old Saybrook Police Tuesday after they tried using fraudulent credit cards to buy high-priced items at a store that sells boating accessories and fishing supplies.
Police said that at about 2:30 p.m. employees of West Marine at 1667 Boston Post Road told them two men were acting suspiciously and attempting to buy items with what they suspected were fraudulent credit cards.
When police arrived, they said one of the suspects was still trying to complete a transaction using different credit cards. It was determined the credit cards were fraudulent and Yosbell Ciscard Jimenez, 37, and Toniel Eugelle Argamonte, 48, both of Miami, Fla., were arrested on charges including credit card theft, forgery, and identity theft.
The suspects were trying to buy merchandise like high-value items such as GPS map plotters, radios and speaker systems.
In all, 71 fraudulent credit cards were seized. The suspects’ name, a credit card number and various bank names were on the actual cards but the information contained on the magnetic strip did not correspond with that information.
The suspects had been driving a rental vehicle that was impounded and searched. During the search, police said more credit cards and thousands of dollars’ worth of additional merchandise was found. It was determined the merchandise was bought fraudulently statewide.
The U.S. Secret Service, one of the Federal agencies that investigates credit card fraud, is helping Old Saybrook Police with the investigation.
The investigation continues and is active.
Both men are being held on $200,000 bail.
