CLINTON – Police arrested a father for driving while intoxicated after a crash Thursday with his two small children in the car.

Clinton police were called around 5:15 p.m. for a two car crash at the at the intersection of Central Ave and High Street, also known as Rt. 81.

Police said they determined the driver of the car that crossed the center of the road and caused the accident appeared to be highly intoxicated. In the car he was driving, there were two children, ages 2; and 7 months. The children were in car seats at the time of the accident, and appeared to be uninjured, but as a precaution they were taken to a local hospital for evaluation. The children’s mother picked them up.  She was not involved in the incident.

Police said an open container believed to be of liquor was found in the center console cup holder, and a partially consumed bottle of liquor was also found by the driver’s seat.

Daniel P. O’Brien, 46, of Guilford was charged with driving under the influence, risk of injury to a minor and failure to drive in the established lane. He was held on a $10,000 bond, and is scheduled to be arraigned at Middlesex Superior court Friday.

DCF was also notified of this incident.
