WILLIMANTIC -- Michael Beattie took the long way home for a good cause.

Beattie, 67, of Storrs, rode his bicycle 12,124 miles around the perimeter of the United States to raise money and awareness in the fight to make sure veterans of the armed forces don't go hungry.  On Sunday, Beattie was honored as he returned home.

Friends organized a hero’s welcome at Veteran’s Memorial Park on Main Street in Willimantic. The event featured live music and several veteran’s groups.

Family and friends turned out to welcome him home.
