OLD LYME -- It's a story of love and treasure hunting.

Laurie and Bill McGrath married 25 years next month, but the treasure hunt begins before that.

About 26 years ago Laurie was set to go on a 10-day trip to Ireland with her friends, but she was distraught about being apart from her boyfriend, Bill, for that long.

"We started dating of course I fell in love with him and it almost ruined my trip because I was oh I wish he could go," Laurie said.

The night before her trip, Bill gave Laurie a gold heart pendant with "best friends" inscribed on it. But it was in two parts.

"I went to grab it and go 'that's so pretty,' and he says 'wait a minute,'" Laurie said.

That's where the treasure hunt comes in.

According to Laurie, Bill said, "You break it apart, there's two. Figure out what half you'd like to wear to Ireland and what half you want to bury there so we can go dig it up."

While in Ireland she buried part of the necklace, and 26 years later the couple went back together to dig it up.

They said one day, both halves will go back into the ground, but that's pretty far off.

"I think I'm going to be buried in one half, and she's going to be buried in the other," said Bill.
