Three kids In Halloween Costumes Trick Or Treating

NIANTIC--It seems Halloween has ended before it even started for one local elementary school.

A parent forwarded FOX 61 a letter sent out by Lillie B. Haynes Principal Melissa DeLoreto. The letter, dated October 19, says that the school has decided to "eliminate the Halloween parade and the wearing of costumes in school."

The letter says that the decision was made for to prevent students from feeling excluded and to ensure the safety of students in light of "increasing societal safety concerns." Specifically, it appears the school was concerned about adults who come to the parade wearing costumes posing a threat.

Classroom celebrations will still be held, but with an autumn theme instead of Halloween.

The parent who sent  FOX 61 the letter was upset by the school's decision, saying it amounted to "killing kids' fun."

The Lillie B. Haynes School is located in Niantic, but is part of the East Lyme School District.
