BLOOMFIELD -- The University of Hartford is investigating a sexual assault that occurred at a party near campus over the weekend.

According to police, Bloomfield officers were called to a home on Ashley Court around 12:30 a.m. Sunday where a party was being held to celebrate a win by the school's rugby team.

The victim told police he or she was forced to engage in sexual activity with another person at the party. Police described the victim as "hysterical" but said he or she was able to identify the suspect. The victim was taken to St. Francis Hospital, police said.

Police said the suspect was cooperative with the investigation and provided a sworn statement that the encounter was consensual. But, investigators said a mutual friend of the victim and suspect walked in on the act in a main floor bathroom and interrupted it.

An email was sent to the school community on Monday.

"At this time, the Department of Public Safety wants to remind the campus community about the availability of information designed to help keep our community members safe, including information around sexual misconduct including rape, sexual assault, sexual harassment, stalking, and intimate partner violence, as well as how to report such incidents, available services, and tips on how to try to prevent these crimes," the statement from John Schmaltz, Director of Public Safety, said.

The school directed students here for information on sexual assaults.

"We remind you that these reports can be made confidentially, both on campus and off campus, and there are services for victims both on and off campus," Schmaltz added.
