Box truck crashes through fence and into river in Bristol

BRISTOL — A 20-foot box truck crashed through the fence and into the Pequabuck River Wednesday morning in Bristol.

It happened around 8:45 a.m. at the intersection of Willis Street and Memorial Boulevard. The driver was able to get himself out of the truck and firefighters removed him from the river bed using ladders.

Some fuel from the truck spilled into the water. Firefighters set up absorbent booms to contain the spill. DEEP also responded to the scene.

The Pequabuck River is popular with anglers and it is stocked with trout by DEEP. A portion of the river – from King Street in Bristol at the intersection of Routes 229 and 72 to Rt. 177 in Plainville – is a Trout Management Area (TMA).  In a TMA, fishing for trout is permitted all year long on a catch-and-release basis. It is not expected that the incident will cause harm to fish or natural resources, DEEP said.

The Westbound lane of Memorial Boulevard is closed at this time.

The truck is owned by New England Beverage of Branford.
