HARTFORD — Gov. Dan Malloy has named ESPN analyst Doug Glanville to the Connecticut Police Officer Standards and Training Council. Glanville had a well publicized encounter with police leading to a law regarding how officers operate over town lines.
POST is responsible for working to enhance the professionalism of law enforcement agencies and enforce professional standards for certification of police officers. The council’s 18 members are appointed include law enforcement officials and members of the general public.
Glanville is a former MLB player and current ESPN analyst. In 2014, Glanville was shoveling his driveway in the West End of Hartford when he was approached by a West Hartford police officer, who had crossed the town line investigating a complaint about a man shoveling driveways for pay, which is a violation of an ordinance involving door-to-door solicitations.
The man was simply described as black. Glanville was forced to explain to an officer from another town that he was standing in his own driveway. He got no apology from the police officer. Glanville wrote about the encounter in an article titled “I Was Racially Profiled in My Own Driveway,” which appeared in The Atlantic. It made national headlines.
In 2015, the state legislature passed a law that deals with police officers leaving their towns and enforcing local ordinances. Malloy signed the bill into law with Glanville standing by his side.
