WATERBURY -- Despite the obstacles, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Waterbury is determined to welcome a mother and daughter into their new house.

It was broken in to last week by unknown thieves looking for valuables, but the home was empty since no one had moved in yet.

"We think they were looking probably jewelry or money. They took a computer from across the street," said Keith Weston, Greater Waterbury Habitat for Humanity executive director. "I was bummed all last week but the response from the community will go, we're getting emails from the newspaper article this morning that businesses are stepping up and individuals are stepping up."

The damage to the home is estimated to be more than $1,000, with an electrical meter being damaged along with windows and doors.

"We were supposed to close this Wednesday and you can't give someone a house that's in disrepair," said Weston.

Police believe the same thieves struck several homes on the same street and are looking for the people responsible.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Waterbury Police.

The mother and daughter are scheduled to move into their new home on Saturday, after all the repairs have been made.
