NEW HAVEN — A 58-year-old man is dead after he was struck and killed by a car Friday night in New Haven. Just before 10 p.m. on October 28, Manuel Bonilla-Torres was walking on Ella T. Grasso Boulevard between Adeline and Frank Streets, police said.

The driver, Jose Lopez-Morales, 31, of East Haven called police to say he accidentally struck a man in the road. Bonilla-Torres was rushed to Yale New Haven Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Lopez-Morales told police he was driving along when Bonilla-Torres left the curb and walked in to the road. He said he didn’t have time or distance to stop the car. A witness traveling behind him told police the same thing. According to investigators, Lopez-Morales was neither intoxicated nor traveling too fast. His license is valid and the car’s registration and insurance are up to date.

“The crash team is waiting for forensic results on the deceased but have thus far concluded the driver is not at fault,” said Officer David Hartman.
