WATERFORD--We've been telling you about family restaurant Crown Pizza in Waterford since Saturday, when the joint got some unexpected advertising in front of a national audience.
The unintended marketing ploy has played off, and fans are coming out in droves to visit the now-famous place!
"It was not planned at all. At all," said Taso Vistas, the owner of Crown Pizza who was friends with Rajai Davis, an outfielder for the Cleveland Indians, in college.
But what's he talking about?
Davis gave Vistas tickets to Game 4 in Chicago, so in return the restaurateur gave his friend a baseball cap emblazoned with his restaurant's name.
"He was excited to get the hat," Vistas said. "I was surprised because it was just a hat, but he's like 'yeah I love it,' and so he takes it. All of a sudden the game finishes and I'm in the Uber, I look at my phone and I have 30 missed calls, 30 text messages."
It turns out, Davis left the cap in the dugout, and the TV camera panned over it while zooming in on ALCS MVP Andrew Miller! The Indians are in their first World Series since 1948, so all eyes are on the team and its players.
Since Saturday, the restaurant has seen nearly double the usual number of orders, and fans came out Tuesday night to see if the Indians would clinch the series in Game 6, but the series was forced to Game 7 as the Chicago Cubs won 9-3.
Advertisements that run during commercial breaks for the World Series normally run in the neighborhood of $500,000, so this was a cheap way to get a lot of new business.
