NEW HAVEN — An 18-year-old Hamden man has been acquitted of murder in the New Year’s Day stabbing of a 34-year-old New Haven man.

The New Haven Register reports that a jury on Monday found Levon Player not guilty on the Jan. 1 stabbing of Chamar Suggs. Suggs was taken to the hospital after the stabbing and died about a week later.

Prosecutors said Player stabbed Suggs with a kitchen knife after an argument.

But his attorney maintained that Player acted in self-defense, and witnesses at trial said Player was backing up when he stabbed Suggs. The defense said Player was “scared” when Suggs came at him and figured that if he pulled out a knife and threatened to use it, the confrontation would be over.
