HARTFORD–A large water main break has drowned the intersection around Westland and Garden streets in Hartford.
Police say a 12-inch water main broke near the 5 Corners, which is a 5-way intersection involved Westland Street, Garden Street and Love Lane. It occurred around 5:30 p.m., and water was shut down at 6:25, though no properties were impacted.
The Metropolitan District, the water company for the city, responded to the scene, and police were there to manage traffic in the busy intersection. They asked that people avoid the area for the entire evening.
The main was installed in 1942.
Repairs were expected to take five to seven hours, and the road was scheduled to reopen between 12 and 2 a.m.
