WEST HAVEN – A West Haven man is accused of assaulting a police officer.

Police said that on Sunday afternoon at around 4 p.m. they went to 114 Elizabeth Street for a domestic dispute call.

They said they saw that Garrett Stearns, 31, had punched several holes in walls and broken several windows in the apartment, and that he was bleeding from his left wrist as a result.

Police said they initially handcuffed him, but because he needed treatment, his left hand was taken out of the handcuffs and treated. Police said that is when Stearns became combative and fought with officers before being forced to the ground. The fight seriously injured one officer’s leg. Police said a kitchen steak knife was found hidden in Stearns’ pants. The injured officer was treated at an area hospital and released.

Stearns was charged with carrying a weapon, inferring with police and interfering with an emergency call, assault on police and disorderly conduct. He was held on $100,000 bail.
