HARTFORD – The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists is the largest pharmacist organization in the world.
Every year they select one person for their “Sustained Contributions to the Literature” award to recognize a pharmacist who conducted research that had a major impact on patient’s lives over the past 20 years. This year they selected Dr. Michael White from the UConn School of Pharmacy and he will accept his award at their annual convention in Las Vegas in December.
White said that clinical research is not a solitary endeavor and that he has worked very closely with doctors, pharmacists, researchers, and nurses at the University of Connecticut and Hartford Hospital to tackle some big issues. Patients from Connecticut volunteered to a part of his studies and we couldn’t have done it without them.
Bypass surgery gives patients back the ability to resume normal activities without restriction from chest pain, but over half of people develop a heart arrhythmia that can prolong their hospitalization and make them feel really sick for a few days,” White said. “Over four large clinical trials we have been able to reduce the risk of this arrhythmia by over 60 percent and decrease hospital length of stay as a result. Hospitals all over the country continue to use our regimen.”
