NORTH HAVEN -- There are cafes and then there is State Street Cafe - filled with breakfast and lunch goodness. Owners Foula and George Mastromanolis are known for serving up unique dishes at their North Haven diner, with a twist.
"I love the kitchen," said George Mastromanolis. "I love cooking and want to transfer creative ingredients to my plates."
A peek of the menu has stacked pumpkin pancakes, eggs Benedict with homemade hollandaise sauce, asparagus topped with crab meat and a dish that includes bologna with attitude.
"It's Taylor Ham and it's from Jersey," said George. "It has beautiful flavors, something between ham and bologna so that's why we call it bologna with attitude."
It's dishes like that, all cooked to order and homemade, that keep loyal customers coming back hungry for more, especially for the specials.
"When you come on the weekend, you may be hesitant and looking at the menu but, have the board specials," said Foula Mastromanolis. "He (George) comes up with these concoctions that just blows our minds."
Their motto is written right on the wall above the kitchen. It says, "you've tried the rest, now try the best."
It is not just about the food that brings everyone together.
"It really is home here and I appreciate each and every one of our customers, they have become our family," said Foula.
