WATERBURY -- Firefighters in Waterbury responded to a fully involved fire in a vacant three-story home at 10 Vermont Street Friday morning.

"The fire is under investigation, said Chief Bret McAllister of the Waterbury Fire Department. "The Fire Marshall is coming back shortly because we had a fire a couple hours earlier about a quarter of a mile up the street. Same thing, a vacant house. Two fires this close is kind of odd."

McAllister said that along with securing the area until the Waterbury Fire Marshall arrived, his crews were still working to keep out hot spots.

The first fire was on Giles Street, one street over from Vermont. McAllister said that one was much smaller and was quickly put out.

The fires started after midnight and the heat from the flames on Vermont Street forced firefighters to evacuate two neighboring multi-family houses. Everyone made it out safely and were allowed back in their homes.

There were no injuries reported.
