BRIDGEPORT — The former top librarian in Connecticut’s largest city has sued the library board, alleging he was fired because of his political involvement and ambitions.

Bridgeport City Librarian Scott Hughes was fired last month after nine years on the job.

The Connecticut Post reports that Hughes’ Superior Court lawsuit alleges that his relationship with the board started deteriorating two years ago when he was elected to the Democratic Town Committee and unsuccessfully ran for the state legislature. He said the board thought his political activity detracted from his duties.

Hughes also said he was also fired because of his support for Mayor Joseph Ganim.

A member of the library board said it would be inappropriate to comment on a pending lawsuit.

Hughes’s suit seeks damages and his job back.
