HAMDEN–It took a month to find the impostor, but police made an arrest after a person allegedly pretended to be a police officer.
On October 20, a 24-year-old from Hamden called police to say that at 1 a.m. he was driving on Evergreen Avenue when he noticed he was being tailgated and that the person behind him was flashing his high beams. The tailgaiter then followed him to his home, the complainant said.
The person in the second car got out quickly upon parking and said he was an off-duty police officer. The two got into a verbal argument because the complainant was suspicious due to the “police officer” using vulgar language and smelling of alcohol.
The “police officer” left after the argument, but said he would return, which he did a short time later. The suspect then banged on the victim’s door, and when he and a family member answered they found the suspect dressed in a police shirt with a patch on it naming a police agency. The suspect also had a police radio and what looked like a gun.
The “police officer” said he’d spoken to his supervisor and needed to arrest the victim, which led to a second verbal fight. Again, the “police officer” left.
Police investigated and determined that Nicholas Ferrucci, 23, of North Haven, was a suspect, and on November 18 Ferrucci was arrested. He is charged with impersonating a police officer, carrying a dangerous weapon and second-degree breach of peace. He was held on a $20,000 bond and will be in court December 2.
