Police chief: Suspect arrested in shooting death of a San Antonio police detective

SAN ANTONIO, Texas–Police in San Antonio announced Monday the arrest of a man suspected of targeting a 50-year-old police officer and killing him during a traffic stop on Sunday.

Police Chief William McManus said Otis Tryone McKane, 31, was arrested in the death of Detective Benjamin Marconi, a 20-year veteran of the department. McKane was arrested around 4:30 p.m. Monday after the car he was driving was stopped on Interstate 10.

Det. Marconi was shot and killed on Sunday after pulling over a driver in a traffic stop on the south side of police headquarters, McManus said.

After the traffic stop, Marconi is believed to have returned to his patrol car to write up a ticket when the suspect pulled up behind him. The suspect then walked up to the patrol car passenger window and shot Marconi in the head, then reached into the vehicle and shot the officer a second time, McManus said.

While the motive is still being investigated, on Sunday McManus likened the shooting to recent deaths of police officers in Dallas, Texas, and Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

On Sunday, before McKane was arrested, San Antonio Police described the suspect as a black male; 20-30 years old; between 5-foot-7 and 6 feet tall; a slim build; with a goatee; possibly with a tattoo or tattoos on his left arm. They were also looking for a black Mitsubishi Galant with custom rims.
