HARTFORD — Some Connecticut highway crews will be using a new type of snowplow this winter that can clear snow and ice from two full lanes in a single pass.

The three tow-behind plows were unveiled Tuesday.

The 26-foot-wide plows are towed behind a state Department of Transportation truck. The agency tested one of the tow plows under a pilot program last winter. This year, DOT bought two additional units for this winter.

Democratic Gov. Dannel Malloy says the new plows will help clear the state roads faster and more efficiently. However, he and DOT Commissioner James Redeker urge drivers to stay clear of the special plows while on the road and caution against trying to pass them.

DOT is responsible for clearing snow on more than 10,800 highway lane-miles.
