NEW HAVEN - Metro-North passengers along with those that ride the bus in Connecticut will have to do a double-take the next time they pay their fares.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation is increasing its fares by 6 percent, which includes an already-planned 1 percent increase.

A spokesman for the CT DOT says the increase is necessary to maintain the current level of service and expand the state's fleet of modern M8 railcars.

The increases come after six public hearings over the past few months, and input from more than 400 people who commented at those hearings.

A one way peak ticket from New Haven to Grand Central Terminal used to be $22, but will now cost $23.25.

The fare increases affect any travel to or from a Connecticut Metro-North station along the New Haven Line and the Shoreline East.

CT Transit and CTFastrak fares will also go up by 25 cents.

The new fares go into effect Thursday, December 1.

Webtickets will no longer available starting December 1, as well.
