OLD SAYBROOK--The holidays is a time for gathering, a time for family, and a time to remember what is good in our lives.

Now, a tree is dedicated to honoring those who protect our country.

The eighth-annual "Heroes Tree" was lit in Old Saybrook on Friday. It's a tribute to military service members, and instead of traditional ornaments the tree is decorated with gold stars for the fallen, silver stars fro the injured and blue stars for every Connecticut resident who is currently serving our country.

It was decorated by World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War veterans, and was originally conceived from artist and Navy Gold Star mom Kathryn Cross. This year's tree was donated by Whelen Engineering Co. Inc., who also helped light it.

The "Heroes Tree" will remain on display in the Katherine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center at 300 Main Street in Old Saybrook through the holiday season.
