HARTFORD -- After a tragic 24 hours Connecticut State Police are reminding drivers to be safe if they find themselves on the shoulders of highways, or any roads.
"The shoulders are for emergency or a disabled vehicle only," said Trooper Dimitrios Karadimos. "Stay in the car. Put your seat belt on, if you have a cell phone call for help, either 911 or AAA if it's a simple fix and you're in a safe spot. If you don't have a cell phone and you're stuck inside the car, don't start walking on the highway, wave your arms, somebody will see you, somebody will call 911."
Thursday, a mother in Old Lyme was killed after she was struck by a passing truck. She had gotten out of her car on the right shoulder to check on her 2-year-old daughter in the back seat.
A man was killed in East Hartford after attempting to cross I-84 on Thursday night.
Also, skateboarders in New Britain and in Enfield were killed by cars.
State police say drivers need to remember to look out for their own safety first before the well-being of their vehicle. If you need help, dial 911.
