FAIRFIELD —  A man who is registered as a sex offender and was just recently released from prison is now accused of sexually assaulting another woman.

Police arrested Michael Fontaine, 48, on Saturday about an hour and a half after a woman reported that she was sexually assaulted and robbed at knife point.

At 10:19 p.m. on Saturday, Fairfield police got a 911 call from a woman about the armed assault, which occurred on the 600 block of Reef Road. She described the suspect as a tall, light-skinned black man who had a knife.

A witness was found, and said he heard a woman screaming and saw a man running away. The witness pointed police in the suspect’s direction.

More officers and a K9 team also responded to track the suspect — which wasn’t hard since it was so recent. There were fresh footprints in the snow and droplets of blood, which police think was from the suspect, who was injured when the victim fought back during the attack.

Around 11:41 p.m. the suspect was found hiding in the bushes on Old Post Road, near Beach Road, less than a mile from where the crime was said to have been committed. He had some of the victim’s belongings on him when he was found.

Fontaine is charged in this crime with aggravated sexual assault in the first degree, robbery in the first degree, assault in the third degree and larceny in the second degree. He is being held on $500,000 bond after being arraigned Monday, and will next be in court January 10.

Police say he only recently got out of prison and is a registered sex offender who has been convicted of sexual assault, robbery, carjacking, narcotics sales and other crimes in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania.

If you have information on similar crimes, call police at 203-254-4840. They are trying to determine if Fontaine is connected to other incidents that have or have not been reported.
