NEW HARTFORD -- It's officially winter, which means it's skiing and snowboarding season!

That's why Ski Sundown in New Hartford opened on Friday for the season. Nine of the mountain's 13 trails opened for the first day of the powder.

"It just feels great, it feels like winter," Bob Switzgable, the owner of Ski Sundown, told FOX 61 about how he feels on opening day.

Kids and adults of all ages were out on the slopes, soaking up the sunny, warm weather while getting in some good exercise.

"There are people skiing here today who are in their 80s, and we have some people here that have never skied before," Norman Bird, a Ski Sundown snow patroller who has worked at the mountain for 25 years, said.

Some of the kids even told us -- off the record of course -- that they'd skipped out on their last day of school in 2016 to hit the moguls and terrain park.
