NEW HAVEN -- A large fire broke out in a condo complex on Monday afternoon.

The New Haven Fire Department reports the fire started inside the roof of the complex, located at 99 Harbor Close. The fire started around 1:30 p.m.

The fire was broadcast as a three alarm fire, meaning more units were needed to suppress it. The fire department said they were having trouble knocking the fire down, and the winds coming off the nearby water was adding to the difficulty. The fire was brought under control around 6 p.m., though firefighters remained on scene to put out hot spots.

According to the fire chief, two people were injured -- one firefighter and one resident. The firefighter's injuries aren't life-threatening, but officials wouldn't provide more information. The resident suffered smoke inhalation.

In all, 12 units were gutted, leaving 18 people displaced. An additional 10 to 12 are uninhabitable, at least for now, due to smoke damage.

No word yet on what caused the fire.

FOX 61 is at the scene and will provide updates as they become available.
