HARTFORD — A clerk at a Hartford package store was able to fight off a possible thief.

According to Hartford Police, on Tuesday around 7:40 p.m. a store clerk called 911 to report  that someone had tried to rob him.

According to the clerk, a male suspect entered the Atwood Package Store, located at 886 New Britain Avenue. The clerk said he tried to steal two bottles of alcohol and run out, but the clerk saw it happen and ran after him.

The suspect apparently threatened the clerk with a firearm while holding his waistband, but the clerk got into a brief physical struggle with the man and restrained him until police arrived.

No gun was found, and no one was injured.

Police arrested the suspect, identified as Christopher Vanetten, 38, of Kensington, and charged him with robbery in the first degree and larceny in the sixth degree.

Police said they will release the surveillance video of the incident taken by store security cameras at a later date.
