NEW HAVEN — Police are investigating after a 2-year-old girl was hit by a car Wednesday evening.

The accident happened at Dixwell Avenue and Goffe Street in New Haven.  Police said the girl was hit while she was being pushed across the street in a stroller by her mother.  The girl was thrown from the stroller and landed in the street, but the mother was not injured.

Police said a passing ambulance stopped to help and EMTs began treating the baby before taking her to the Yale-New Haven Pediatric Hospital emergency room.

The girl is in critical but stable condition, according to police. The driver of the car, a 52-year-old Woodbridge resident, stayed at the scene and is cooperating with police. So far, no charges have been filed.

"The child's stroller took the brunt of the impact, however the child was ejected from the stroller," said David Hartman of the New Haven Police Department. "This shakes all of us, it shakes the driver of the car, it shakes the child, it shakes the parent and it shakes the officers too, nobody likes to see this type of thing happen."
