HARTFORD -- Loki is a Maltese/Affenpinscher mix. He is 6 years-old and neutered.

As one volunteer described him, Loki is the Chris Farley of dogs:  a fat, little comedian, who just wants to make everyone smile. While the rest of the kennel dogs are barking, Loki can be heard in his pen, honking his little plush ducky toy. He knows he’s silly and loves to get a laugh -- the total kennel clown.

He came to POA through unfortunate circumstances. His person passed away and the rest of the family already had too many animals, even though they are animal lovers.

He is morbidly obese and needs to lose weight, so whomever adopts him, needs not to love him with food.

He gets along with everyone, cats, other dogs, and kids. He is seriously the canine version of Chris Farley. Everyone’s a buddy!

He is trained and housebroken, but hates dog kibble. He’ll learn to tolerate it if he needs to.

He’s adapting well to POA’s exercise regimen, but we’re taking it easy on him. He’s getting the walks, but we have to temper the distance and time so as not to hurt him.

POA is also holding a low-cost spay/neuter clinic.  The goal of the clinic is to provide high-quality spay/neuter services to dog and cat owners in the area to
reduce the number of unwanted animals by making spay/neuter affordable to people who otherwise can’t afford to have it done.

Services are also available to local rescues and animal control, to spay/neuter as many animals as possible.

POA will be able to do this affordably, because the clinic will only offer spay/neuter and basic vaccination services:

  • Dogs $175 to $225, based on size
  • Pit Bulls - $100
  • Cats $65-$85, including feral cats

State vouchers will be accepted, and there will be programs to subsidize services for those who can demonstrate need.
