WEST HAVEN —  A West Haven man is facing several charges after police said he tried to steal a firetruck.

On January 4, firefighters responded to a medical call on Main Street around 5:40 p.m.  While inside the residence, firefighters heard sirens from their parked truck outside.

Looking outside, firefighters discovered a man sitting in the driver’s seat of the truck, trying to start the engine. They ran outside and had to forcibly remove the man from inside of the truck, according to police.

Wayne Gagne, 63, of West Haven was arrested once police arrived on the scene.  While searching Gagne, police discovered a large hunting knife with an 8 inch blade.

Gagne was charged with criminal attempt to commit larceny in the 1st and possession of a dangerous weapon.  He is being held on bond.
